A late, small flowered, semi-woody climber. From July to September a profusion of crimson red flowers are borne. Named after the kermes insect from which the red dye cochineal is obtained. As with most clematis of the viticella group it also shows good resistance to clematis wilt and is drought tolerant.

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in sun, with the roots and base of the plant in shade. It will reach a height of 2.5m and a spread of 1.2m.
