Cynara

Cardoon. A clump-forming perennial with deeply cut, usually spiny, silvery-grey leaves. From June to September, purple thistle-like flowerheads are borne on grey-wooly stems.

Grow in moist but well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil in full sun. It will reach a height of 1.5m and a spread of 1.2m.
