    A vigorous, deciduous, bulbous perennial which has thick, erect stems bearing whorled, lance-shaped, mid- to bright green leaves. In April and May, a terminal umbel of bell-shaped, deep orange-red flowers blooming beneath a tuft of leaf-like bracts is borne.

    Grow in moist, free-draining soil in a sunny but cool or partly shaded position. It will reach a height of 1.5m and a spread of 50cm.

    Snake’s Head Fritillary. A small bulbous perennial which has narrow -grey-green leaves. In spring, delicate, nodding, bell-shaped flowers which have purple and pink markings resembling a chess-board are borne.

    Grow in moist, free-draining soil in a sunny but cool or partly shaded position. It will reach a height of 50cm and a spread of 10cm.

    Fox’s Grape Fritillary. A small bulbous perennial which has grassy leaves. From mid- to late spring, dark-mahogany, nodding, bell-shaped flowers tipped yellow are borne.

    Grow in moist, free-draining soil in a sunny but cool or partly shaded position. It will reach a height of 20cm and a spread of 8cm.
