Clematis viticella ‘Flore Pleno’ (syn. Mary Rose )
Known more often under its common name Clematis ‘Mary Rose’, this clematis is believed to date from the 1500’s and was thought to have been lost for several hundred years, but it was rediscovered in the 1980’s by Barry Fretwell who named it Clematis ‘Mary Rose’. From July to September semi-nodding, rosette-like double, deep dusky-amethyst flowers are borne. As with most clematis of the viticella group it also shows good resistance to clematis wilt and is drought tolerant.
Grow in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in sun, with the roots and base of the plant in shade. It will reach a height of 4m and a spread of 2m.
