£2.00Each fruit is the size of a small apple, hence this commonly being known as the ‘Apple Cucumber’ – but as its fruit is a pale yellow in colour when ready to eat it’s actually called ‘Crystal Lemon’. Reputed to be more digestible than many other cucumbers, this has a mild sweet flavour and is very juicy – just make sure the cucumbers don’t get too large or take on a more golden colour as the skins will become bitter. This is also an excellent variety for pickling also. The habit of the plant can be quite sprawling but they can be tied into a trellis or something similar. Also known as Soy Beans, these have become a new favourite with restaurants. Each short, little, hairy pod contains up to three green beans, full of goodness and high in protein. The beans should be cooked before eating. They have a lovely nutty flavour and are commonly served salted. They are best picked before they are fully ripe as they tend to be sweeter and are best eaten fresh because after the first ten hours their flavour decreases (so what better crop to grow yourself!). They can also be blanched and frozen. Plant out approximately 6″ (15 cms) apart. Crop late summer/early autumn. Reach approximately 3 feet (90 cms) tall. Like a sunny position.
