Description
Nyssa sylvatica
Black Gum. Sour Gum. Tupelo. A broadly conical to columnar tree which has arching lower branches. It bears ovate to obovate, matt or glossy, dark green leaves which turn vivid colours of orange, red, yellow in autumn. Small inconspicuous green flowers are borne in early summer which are followed by small, ovoid blue fruits.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral to acid soil in sun or partial shade, shelter form cold, dry winds. It is slow growing but will reach an ultimate height of 20m and a spread of 10m.
