Pre. 1835. A gardener’s favourite for over 100 years for its reliable performance on most soils and heavy crops of delicious beans. Produces long pods containing an average of 6 to 8 beans per pod. This variety has an excellent flavour and is ideal for freezing. The beans have a lovely sweet flavour which is maintained even if frozen. Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects. Height: 120cm (47″). Spread: 45cm (18″).

Possible Lettuce types: Butterheads: flattish, rounded heads, soft texture, heart forming, can be grown nearly all year-round. Cos/Romaine: Tall and upright, sweet flavour, loose heart forming. Both large and small types. Crisp/Iceberg/Batavian: crisp leaves, compact hearts. Iceberg: very crisp leaves. Batavian: thinner leaves than Icebergs, but thicker and crispier leaves than Butterheads. Curled/Oak Leaf/Salad Bowl: mainly non-hearting types. Wide variety of leaf textures and colours. Lollo Bionda/Lollo Rossa: non-hearting types with very deeply curled leaves. Lollo Bionda varieties are green, Lollo Rossa varieties are red.

Circa 1841. Red, globe shaped Italian Heirloom variety from Chioggia, a fishing village on the Adriatic. It tastes just like regular purple beets, maybe a little sweeter. The skin is a hot pink/fuchsia colour, and when sliced open, the inside has beautiful pink and white stripes, adding an attractive element to the salad plate. The rings do fade when cooked. Height Up to 30cm (11.8in) Spread Up to 15cm (5.9in) so plant 30cm apart. Likes full sun.

A Ridge-type cross that can be grown as either Greenhouse or Outside. First grown in Mr. Lows of an Uxbridge nursery in 1889, a cross between Purley Pink Hero & Verdant Green. A good beginners or amateur’s cucumber, from 6 to 8 inches in length, somewhat thick, smooth, perfectly straight & short neck, very easily grown. Leave the flowers on. Keep them picked and they’ll keep producing. Height – up to 300cm.
