One of those reliable old favourite varieties that Grandad grew to produce an excellent crop of tasty, thick, short solid white stems with broad dark flags through the winter (Oct- Mar). also if Harvested young, as baby leeks, these have a fantastically sweet flavour which doesn’t falter if they are left to mature. A very early variety with extra-long slender flat pods of excellent flavour. The beans are string-less when picked young and will produce a heavy crop for several weeks over the summer if picked regularly. Brown seeded. In cultivation by 1633. A traditional, beautiful large bean, usually purple with mottled black but can often be lavender, yet was named for its beautiful scarlet flowers. Pick when young when both pod and bean can be eaten, or grow on for kidney beans. Runner beans are a good source of Vitamin C, folate and iron, and have a high fibre content. Try growing runner beans with sweet peas to attract pollinating insects to the flowers. Allow 22-25cm between plants. Crop from July onwards. Height 300cm.

Old traditional hardy variety producing reliable, heavy yielding, strong growing, medium sized, good flavoured sprouts from early autumn into winter. Ideal for exposed locations, will over winter in snow. Removing the growing tip of the plant about a month before the harvesting increases cropping. Do not grow in the same area as where a member of the cabbage family grew in the previous year. Harvest from the ground up. Spacing, Row: 24-36 inches Spacing, Plant: 18-24 inches.
