    Marrubium vulgare. A hardy perennial which has aromatic grey-green wrinkled leaves that give the plant an unusual woolly appearance. Small white flowers are borne in dense whorls around the stems in summer from its second year of growing. The flowers are also attractive to bees and other pollinators. A very bitter herb which was once used to flavour beer. An infusion of the leaves can be used to treat coughs and bronchitis.

    Grow in poor, well-drained soil in full sun with shelter from cold, drying winds, and protection from excessive winter wet. It will reach a height of 45cm and a spread of spread 30cm.

    Joe Pye Weed. A tall plant with deep reddish-purple stems bearing clusters of long-stalked, oval to lance-shaped, finely toothed leaves which are often tinged purple. From July to September, rounded sprays of purple flowers are borne at the tips of the stems.

    Grow in moderately moist soil in full sun or partial shade. It will reach a height of 2.2m and a spread of 1m.

    Wall Germander. A neat, low-growing, evergreen subshrub forming a dense, bushy mound of small, glossy, dark green leaves.  From mid to late summer, spikes of rosy-purple flowers are produced above the foliage, attracting bees and other pollinators while adding a soft haze of colour.

    Grow in well-drained soil in full sun. Drought tolerant once established and well suited to gravel gardens, herb gardens and Mediterranean-style planting. It will reach a height of 20-30cm and a spread of 30-45cm.

    A compact, bushy, rounded, evergreen subshrub which has oblong, toothed, glossy, dark green leaves. From July to September, loose racemes of pink, purple or white flowers are borne.
