    Melissa officinalis ‘Mandarine’. Introducing an alternative to the traditional Lemon Balm. This mint-like perennial has a five lobed dark green leaves which have pronounced mandarin orange scent. The leaves are often used for herbal teas,  infusions, and pot pourri. Ideal in mixed containers as the plants have a trailing habit.

    Grow in a sunny position. It will reach a height of 30cm with a mounding habit.

    Origanum vulgare. Also known as Pot Marjoram. This hardy perennial herb has sweet smelling, aromatic foliage which is commonly used in Mediterranean cuisine. Try it sprinkling oregano on lamb or pork before cooking.  The flowers produced in summer and autumn can also be used for flavouring after they have been gently dried.

A large flat leaved type which is a finer plant than the curled types which generally has a sweet more delicate flavour than curled parsley making it ideal for more general cooking use.      Rosmarinus officinalis. A dense, evergreen shrub with aromatic linear grey-green leaves. Produces pale blue flowers from April to June and often again in autumn. Its an amazing addition to lamb. Don’t plant too close to Sage, they don’t get on, at best the Sage will struggle, at worst it will die off.

    Grow in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. It will reach a height and spread of 1.5m.

    Dragonwort. Tall spires of green leaves with greeny-yellow flowers. In addition to surviving hot and climates better than French Tarragon, it tends to be milder although the flavour improves, the older the plant is. Bitter-sweet, warm, peppery scent with an anise undertone. A few leaves are rich in essential iodine, and vitamins A and C, as well as trace elements and beneficial mineral salts. Leaves shredded into scrambled egg can raise this simple dish to a new level. Good for herb butter. Great for flavouring vinegar. Grow in rich, but light, dry soil but will tolerate poorer soils. It will reach a height of 90cm.

    Origanum majorana. With a mild flavour it is delicious in stuffings, soups, stews, omelettes, cheese dishes, fish sauces and salads. Sprinkle over pork, before roasting or add to melted butter to garnish vegetables. Recommended by herbalists to lower high blood pressure and combat headaches, and neuralgia.  Most often grown as annuals, given that they resent winter wet and are half hardy.

    Origanum onites. A hardy deciduous sub shrub which has dark green, aromatic, hairy leaves. Clusters of tiny tubular mauve flowers are borne in July and August. A versatile culinary herb, use fresh leaves in a variety of dishes. You can also dry or freeze leaves for use over winter.
