Monarda didyma. Also known as Bee Balm, Crimson Beebalm, Scarlet Beebalm, Scarlet Monarda, and Oswego Tea. A hardy perennial which produces distinctive flowerheads in varying shades of red, each consisting of lots of curving tubular flowers growing from a central point, creating a dome of petals. If deadheaded regularly it can bloom from early summer to early autumn.
The lemon-orange scented leaves can be used in salads, teas and cool summer drinks. They have a savory but fruity aroma which enhances foods such as vegetables and jellies. The flavour works well with pork and veal. The flowers can also be used in salads.
Grow in rich, light moist soil in full sun or partial shade. Mulch plants in hot dry spells to keep the roots moist and cool. It will reach a height of 60-90cm.
