A deciduous climber with pinnate leaves divided into ovate or broadly lance-shaped, mid-green leaflets. Large, single, pale lilac-blue flowers are borne in early to midsummer, and again in early to mid-autumn.

A late, small flowered, semi-woody climber. From July to September small, semi-nodding, deep reddish-purple flowers, more red at the central bars, with purple anthers are borne. As with most clematis of the viticella group it also shows good resistance to clematis wilt and is drought tolerant.
