A range of varieties all developed for baby leaf or whole head production. All feature excellent colour and texture, plus high levels of mildew resistance. Space approximately 35cm apart. Possible Lettuce types: Butterheads: flattish, rounded heads, soft texture, heart forming, can be grown nearly all year-round. Cos/Romaine: Tall and upright, sweet flavour, loose heart forming. Both large and small types. Crisp/Iceberg/Batavian: crisp leaves, compact hearts. Iceberg: very crisp leaves. Batavian: thinner leaves than Icebergs, but thicker and crispier leaves than Butterheads. Curled/Oak Leaf/Salad Bowl: mainly non-hearting types. Wide variety of leaf textures and colours. Lollo Bionda/Lollo Rossa: non-hearting types with very deeply curled leaves. Lollo Bionda varieties are green, Lollo Rossa varieties are red.
Each fruit is the size of a small apple, hence this commonly being known as the ‘Apple Cucumber’ – but as its fruit is a pale yellow in colour when ready to eat it’s actually called ‘Crystal Lemon’. Reputed to be more digestible than many other cucumbers, this has a mild sweet flavour and is very juicy – just make sure the cucumbers don’t get too large or take on a more golden colour as the skins will become bitter. This is also an excellent variety for pickling also. The habit of the plant can be quite sprawling but they can be tied into a trellis or something similar. There is no need to remove male flowers on this variety. Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects. Plant two per growbag.

Also known as Soy Beans, these have become a new favourite with restaurants. Each short, little, hairy pod contains up to three green beans, full of goodness and high in protein. The beans should be cooked before eating. They have a lovely nutty flavour and are commonly served salted. They are best picked before they are fully ripe as they tend to be sweeter and are best eaten fresh because after the first ten hours their flavour decreases (so what better crop to grow yourself!). They can also be blanched and frozen. Plant out approximately 6″ (15 cms) apart. Crop late summer/early autumn. Reach approximately 3 feet (90 cms) tall. Like a sunny position.
