A beautiful hardy annual herb with rough leaves covered in silvery hairs and the most attractive celestial blue flowers. Nectar rich borage flowers are particularly attractive to pollinating insects, including bees which make distinctive flavoured borage honey. This versatile upright herb has a multitude of uses – add the cucumber flavoured leaves to summer drinks and salads, grow it as a companion plant close to other crops to attract pollinating insects, and at the end of the season plants make a useful bulky addition to the compost. Satureja hortensis. With slender bronze green leaves and lilac tubular flowers, this hardy annual makes an attractive addition to the herb garden. It lends an aromatic peppery tang to soups and seafoods and grown next to broad beans it is reputed to help repel black fly.

Angelica archangelica. Angelica is in fact a member of the carrot family, and an ancient and versatile herb. Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects. Angelica has many culinary and medicinal uses, the stems have traditionally been candied for decoration of confectionary, and can even be used to flavour gin! It will self-seed everywhere if allowed to flower so either cut the flowers off before they set or ‘bag’ the flower heads. Plant 60-90cm apart. It will reach a height of 0.9-2.4m.
Mentha spicata var. crispa ‘Moroccan’. If you love making mint tea, then this is one of the best varieties to choose. You can also use it to flavour salads, potatoes, peas, lamb , or to make mojitos. Vigorous growth. Recommended for pot growing due to self seeding.
