A low-growing, tuberous perennial with rounded to heart-shaped leaves that vary in colour from dark green to silver and often have intricate marbling or patterns. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates, forming a neat, ground-hugging mat that provides interest even when the plant is not in bloom. From January to March small, upward-facing flowers, in shades of pink, magenta, or occasionally white, with slightly reflexed petals that resemble a butterfly shape are borne.
Grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, well drained soil in partial to full shade. It will reach a height of 8-10cm and a spread of 10-15cm.
