A vigorous, clump-forming perennial which has deep maroon stems bearing broadly lance-shaped to ovate, mid-green leaves, maroon at the base. In summer, sturdy, maroon scapes bearing racemes of bell-shaped, purple flowers are borne.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil with shelter from cold, drying winds. Prefers a site in full or partial shade. It will reach a height of 40cm and a spread of 80cm.
