Melissa officinalis. A bushy perennial with broadly ovate, lemon-scented leaves with scalloped edges, and leafy spikes of creamy-white or pale purple flowers in summer. The flowers are attractive to bees, reflected in one of the plant’s common names (bee balm), and the lemon-scented leaves are delicious in salads, soups and also great for tea making. It will reach a height of 1.2m and a spread of 60cm.
This aromatic annual can be grown for its seeds or its rich, aniseed flavoured foliage that complements fish dishes particularly well. The feathery leaves make an attractive addition to a sunny herb garden. This easy to grow herb is tolerant of most conditions and requires little maintenance. It will reach a height of 90cm and a spread of 30cm.

Fennel may be grown as a herb for its attractive ferny foliage or as a vegetable for its swollen base and stem. With a delicate aniseed flavour the foliage of this hardy perennial makes a tasty addition to salads or as an attractive garnish. Mentha x gracilis. Also known as Slender, Scotch, Red, Austrian, Red stemmed, Golden apple, Little-leaved or Vietnamese Mint. This mint has almost tiger striped leaves with orange stripes running down the green leaves which have an apple/ginger scent. From August to October small lilac flowers are borne on red stems. It can be used for making tea, but also makes a good addition to salads and homemade lemonade. Particularly good accompaniment to melon and tomatoes. Good for mint sauce. Vigorous growth. Recommended for pot growing due to self seeding.
