Fennel may be grown as a herb for its attractive ferny foliage or as a vegetable for its swollen base and stem. With a delicate aniseed flavour the foliage of this hardy perennial makes a tasty addition to salads or as an attractive garnish. With a multitude of uses, fennel can even be used as a compress for softening rough chapped hands, or for treating numerous ailments. Although Fennel is a short-lived perennial, it is generally grown as an annual. It will reach a height of 180cm and a spread of 45cm.
Mentha x piperita. This mint has purple-brown leaves. From August to October pretty pink flowers are borne. It is especially good for making tea as it is said to be stronger than the white variety, but also makes a good addition to salads or for flavouring sweets or ice cream. Vigorous growth. Recommended for pot growing due to self seeding.

A large flat leaved type which is a finer plant than the curled types which generally has a sweet more delicate flavour than curled parsley making it ideal for more general cooking use.
