An excellent bushy dwarf variety, ideal for the smaller garden, and good in large containers. Well suited to the exposed windy garden where larger varieties would suffer from wind rock. Produces plenty of 15cm (6″) pods each containing five small, but deliciously tender beans, which are excellent for freezing. Extremely hardy and perfect for over-wintering. A Ridge-type cross that can be grown as either Greenhouse or Outside. First grown in Mr. Lows of an Uxbridge nursery in 1889, a cross between Purley Pink Hero & Verdant Green. A good beginners or amateur’s cucumber, from 6 to 8 inches in length, somewhat thick, smooth, perfectly straight & short neck, very easily grown. Leave the flowers on. Keep them picked and they’ll keep producing. Height – up to 300cm.

One of those reliable old favourite varieties that Grandad grew to produce an excellent crop of tasty, thick, short solid white stems with broad dark flags through the winter (Oct- Mar). also if Harvested young, as baby leeks, these have a fantastically sweet flavour which doesn’t falter if they are left to mature. In cultivation by 1633. A traditional, beautiful large bean, usually purple with mottled black but can often be lavender, yet was named for its beautiful scarlet flowers. Pick when young when both pod and bean can be eaten, or grow on for kidney beans. Runner beans are a good source of Vitamin C, folate and iron, and have a high fibre content. Try growing runner beans with sweet peas to attract pollinating insects to the flowers. Allow 22-25cm between plants. Crop from July onwards. Height 300cm.
