A species native to North America, this form is less vigorous than its Chinese and Japanese cousins, which makes it suitable for growing in a large pot. In late spring and early summer, pea-like, pendant racemes of flowers are borne. These are fragrant,  5-15cm in length and violet, with white centres and greenish-yellow eyes.

Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It will reach a height of 5m or more.
