A deciduous, perennial climber which has pinnate leaves divided into ovate or broadly lance-shaped, mid- to bright green leaves. From late spring to late summer, rosy-purple flowers with rich raspberry-red central bars are borne. As the blooms mature the colour changes to lavender-blue with a rose-pink bar.

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in sun, with the roots and base of the plant in shade. It will reach a height of 1.2m and a spread of 75cm.
