Chenepodium bonus-henricus. A perennial which has tall spire-like flowers of greenish yellow, and triangular leaves rather like spinach, which it resembles in taste. The young leaves can be used in exactly the same way as perpetual spinach whilst the juvenile flower buds can be sautéed in butter. The young shoots can be forced in the spring to produce an alternative to Asparagus.

Hyssopus officinalis. A hardy, semi evergreen, perennial herb with slim dark green foliage which has beautiful royal blue flowers that will attract plenty of bees from midsummer to autumn. Plant seedlings out during the summer 60cm apart. Benefits from being cut back hard in spring or summer as otherwise can become woody. It will reach a height and spread of 60cm.

Galium verum. Also known as Yellow Bedstraw. A perennial plant which has whorls of slender, dark-green leaves and from July to August honey-scented, golden-yellow flowers are borne. It has a pleasant smell of new mown hay when dried which explains why it was once used as a mattress filler. Ideal for a sunny wildflower or perennial border, it’s an important food-source for caterpillars of the broad-bordered bee hawk moth.
Grow in full sun in poor soil. It will reach a height and spread of 50cm.

£1.75Melissa officinalis. A bushy perennial with broadly ovate, lemon-scented leaves with scalloped edges, and leafy spikes of creamy-white or pale purple flowers in summer. The flowers are attractive to bees, reflected in one of the plant’s common names (bee balm), and the lemon-scented leaves are delicious in salads, soups and also great for tea making. It will reach a height of 1.2m and a spread of 60cm.

£3.25Aloysia citrodora. A perennial, frost hardy, subshrub with slender, lemon-scented, bright green leaves which clothe the upright stems. Delicate clusters of pale lilac to white flowers are borne from July to August. The leaves are used to make herbal teas, and to flavour liqueurs, adding a lemon flavor to fish and poultry dishes, vegetable marinades, salad dressings, jams, puddings, Greek yoghurt, and beverages. It can be used for potpourri.

Mentha x gracilis. Also known as Slender, Scotch, Red, Austrian, Red stemmed, Golden apple, Little-leaved or Vietnamese Mint. This mint has almost tiger striped leaves with orange stripes running down the green leaves which have an apple/ginger scent. From August to October small lilac flowers are borne on red stems.
