    A beautiful hardy annual herb with rough leaves covered in silvery hairs and the most attractive celestial blue flowers. Nectar rich borage flowers are particularly attractive to pollinating insects, including bees which make distinctive flavoured borage honey. This versatile upright herb has a multitude of uses – add the cucumber flavoured leaves to summer drinks and salads, grow it as a companion plant close to other crops to attract pollinating insects, and at the end of the season plants make a useful bulky addition to the compost. It will reach a height 60cm and a spread of 45cm.

    Chamaemelum nobile. A perennial which forms a dense, creeping mat of aromatic leaves, which are topped with wonderful, white, daisy-like flowers in June and July. A valuable medicinal herb, the flowers can be dried and used to make chamomile tea.

    Grow in well-drained soil in full sun. It will reach a height of 30cm and a spread of 45cm.

    Anthriscus cerefolium. Gourmet’s Parsley. A hardy annual which is an improved European Chervil which has small white flowers, and is slower to bolt and more cold resistant. The dark green, parsley-like leaves, are added fresh or dried to eggs, asparagus, potatoes, salads, and soups. The flavour is like parsley, with mild anise liquorice overtones.

    Chervil of the best quality comes from plants grown in partial shade. It will reach a height of 30cm.

    Allium schoenoprasum. A  bulbous perennial which forms a clump of erect narrowly cylindrical, onion-scented leaves. From July to August rounded umbels of light purple bell-shaped flowers are borne. Chives are grown to harvest the edible leaves, which enhance the flavour of many savoury dishes. The flowers are also edible.

    Grow in full sun. It will reach a height of 50cm and a spread of 5cm.

    Allium tuberosum. A  bulbous perennial which forms a clump of erect , flattened, strappy leaves. From July to August rounded umbels of white bell-shaped flowers are borne. Chives are grown to harvest the edible leaves, which enhance the flavour of many savoury dishes, this variety has a pleasantly garlicky taste. The flowers are also edible, pick just after they open and sprinkle on salads for a pretty and spicy garnish.

    Symphytum officinale. A bushy perennial  which has bristly, spear-shaped leaves and pink/lilac blue flowers which hang in clusters like bells. The leaves make an excellent potash fertiliser for tomatoes and potatoes, they are cut and put into a tub with water to make a very nutritious feed for all garden plants since it fixes many nutrients and trace elements through its growth. Young leaves can be cooked like spinach or asparagus – but don’t eat the old leaves. When used as a poultice it helps stimulate new cell growth, repairs tissue and cartilage. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties and is good for helping bruises, cuts, sores, sprains and over-strained muscles.

    Grow in sun or shade in moist soils, it will grow in clay soils, it can be invasive. It will reach a height of 1-1.5m.
